Sustainability at AstraZeneca

We seek to create value beyond the impact of our medicines by embedding sustainability into everything we do from the lab to the patient. We are committed to contributing to a more sustainable future for people, society and planet.

Sustainability and us

Through science-based solutions and collaboration, we believe we can transform the delivery of healthcare and help tackle some of the biggest challenges of our time, from climate change and biodiversity loss, to health equity and health system resilience.

If you want to drive positive change, then join us. Together, we can build more resilient, equitable and net zero health systems. A sustainable future starts with health.

To learn more about our sustainability strategy, and interconnected sustainability priorities, see our Sustainability Reports and Resources.

Access to healthcare

From prevention, early detection and diagnosis to effective treatment of disease, we provide solutions across the patient care pathway. Our ambition is to help secure a future where all people have access to affordable, sustainable, innovative, healthcare. Through our Healthy heart Africa (HHA), Health Lung and Young Health Programmes (YHP), we have reached over 66.4 million people. And we've trained more than 127,384 healthcare workers. We've done all this and more, to deliver improved health outcomes and strengthen healthcare systems across the globe.

To increase access to healthcare, we focus on three areas – Equitable access, Affordability and pricing, and Health system resilience.

To give everyone the chance to be as healthy as possible, we are working to identify barriers to access and innovating to deliver our life-changing medicines in a sustainable and equitable way. This includes through global, regional and local partnerships.

We are committed to promoting prevention, increasing access to diagnostics and treatments, and strengthening health system sustainability and resilience.

Environmental protection

We know that a healthy environment is critical for good health, and that to build a sustainable future, we must take bold action on climate change – together and without delay. That is why we are using a science-led approach to deliver medicines that improve patient outcomes in a way that is respectful of our planet. Through our Ambition Zero Carbon programme, we are pursuing ambitious science-based decarbonisation targets to achieve net zero by 2045 at the latest. We're investing in new ways of working and maximising the efficiency of how we use natural resources, ensuring our contribution to society is also in harmony with nature. What does this mean for you? As a colleague at AstraZeneca, you will make a real difference, supporting the delivery of net-zero, patient-centric healthcare, and working collaboratively to deliver medicines with the smallest possible environmental impact.

Under our environmental protection priority area, we have three focus areas: Ambition Zero Carbon, Product sustainability, and Natural resources. We are on track to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our global operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 98% by 2026 (from a 2015 baseline) and halve our entire value chain footprint by 2030 on the way to a 90% reduction by 2045 (from a 2019 baseline). We were one of the first seven companies worldwide to have our Scope 1-3 targets verified under the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Corporate Standard. We are also restoring nature and supporting biodiversity through our global AZ Forest Programme. We aim plant and ensure the long-term survival of 200 million trees by 2030, helping to build ecological and community resilience.

Ethics and transparency

As a global organisation, we are committed to operating ethically and responsibly. We seek to create value beyond the impact of our medicines. This means ensuring ethical, open and inclusive behaviour across our organisation and value chain.

Under our Ethics and transparency priority, we have three focus areas - Ethical business culture, Inclusion and diversity, Workforce safety and health.

To foster a diverse and empowered workforce, we have dedicated networks and programmes that promote collaboration, continuous learning and which support employees in shaping and achieving their objectives. We also emphasise values-based decision-making, speaking up as part of our ethical business culture and gender equality. In 2023, 83% of employees felt that AstraZeneca had a "Speak up" culture. 50.1% of senior middle management roles were held by women. We continue to support issues and initiatives of importance to the local communities in which we operate and seek to tailor programmes to suit local needs and make positive contributions. We are more than just the medicines we create. That is why building trust by demonstrating integrity, transparency and fair treatment is central to everything we do.
